I am delighted to announce that we are opening up an outlet store for Extra Large Clothing. Why? We are an online retailer so surely a bricks and mortar store is a backward step?
Why a Bricks and Mortar Store?
I have battled with myself over this conumdrum for several months. My Dad, who I share premises with didn’t want to have to give up precious storage space to make a fitting room. Then I decided not to keep intellectualising about it and just get on with it as have a large amount of stock arriving for the Autumn /Winter collection over the next few weeks, space is at a premium, cashflow is tight (as always – hey it’s a small comapany!) – and we’ll never know unless we try it.
From a commercial viewpoint I get to build relationships with customers who live nearby. They may like to preview new collections to make sure I’m not going down the wrong route, fashionwise. Some of them may be interested in being models for the new catalogue. Hopefully they will make nice comments about our friendly service that we can post on the blog. They might give me more insight into the problems faced by people of large stature than I get on the end of a phone or by e-mail.
Boutique or Outlet?
On the downside, any money I spend on shop fittings is not going into building the brand online: more adwords or a mannequin? So whilst I would like my shop to look like a boutique or the Oakman showroom, illustrated, the reality is, this is not where my talents lie. The clothes will look like this, the ambience won’t! So I decided to call it an oulet store, to get across the idea that it’s more of a factory shop environment, but you can buy recognised brands, plus we have some excellent sale offers – hence the word ‘outlet’. To be perfectly honest, we haven’t even bought carrier bags but we can offer boxes!

New into stock this week – this chambray denim-blue coloured shirt is a key fashion look for this Autumn and Spring 2011. Perfect with jeans and one of our Autumn 2010 fashion jackets. Fabric: 100% cotton, Sizes: 3xl, 4xl, 5xl. Order now from extralargeclothing.co.uk, tel 01780 755 490.
As I headed for the office this morning I saw a guy wearing a green hoodie with MATCHING green and black checked boxers – how? He was wearing his cargo shorts low so that you could see a good portion of the boxers at the back. I thought this was quite well thought out as an outfit, imagine going to the effort of matching your shorts to your hoody each morning! I’ll definitely have to check our stock when our new season hooded tops arrive next week to see whether we can recreate the look!
News from The Extra Large Clothing Specialists – These joggers arrived in our warehouse yesterday and we are thrilled with them. I noticed a distinct chill in the air this morning so I think now would be a good time to order them in readiness for cooler days. Ideal for loungewear or your new autumn fitness campaign (well we all have good intentions at the start of a new term!).
They are super high quality heavyweight jogging trousers by Duke London. These jogging bottoms are made of soft, warm sweatshirt material and are fleecy on the inside with stripes and applique badge hip detail.
Three colour choices (our problem would be which to choose!):
Dark navy blue with gold stripes (illustrated)
Black with grey stripes
Grey with navy blue stripes
IN STOCK NOW FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY – Phone on 01780 755 490 to place your order – these will be up on the extralargeclothing.co.uk website early next week.
We will also be getting the matching hooded sweatshirt to go with the navy blue/gold striped jogging trousers.
‘Winston Churchill, Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles all carried their weight with great panache…‘ so why ‘shroud yourself in unflattering sportswear?‘ (Claudia Croft, Sunday Times Style Section, 27/06/10)
Here is our fashion collection for the bigger gent:
Classic styled chinos or fashionable cargos in 100% cotton
Pinstriped waistcoat and trousers – perfect for weddings or evenings out.
Black is the new black – where would we be without black trousers for work?
The Milan 007 suit – stunning Italian tailoring for big men
Bedford cords – a change from jeans but nothing too formal – in textured cotton
We have just taken delivery of some really smart trousers in big sizes from Life and Limb by Oakman – they are charcoal grey with a fine pinstripe and would be excellent for evenings out. Waist size 44 – 54 in tall fitting too. If you have a wedding or christening to go to, you can team them with the matching waistcoat. View these trousers at: www.extralargeclothing.co.uk
Plans are progressing for the NEW ‘Extra Large Clothing‘ mail order catalogue of big sized menswear: I visited one of my suppliers today to look at the Autumn 2010 collection.
We are going with the country/outdoors casual look but mixed with an edgy, modern urban take – so a fabulously fashionable high collar waxed jacket in black with buttoned pockets on the front – I saw something very similar in the Sunday Times Style mag last week – the perfect barbour/biker mix but in extra large up to 7xl and extra tall sizes too!
We also have a black zip jacket, believe it or not in stab-proof fabric – now the designer told me not to mention this in case we get sued for incitement to violence (or sued if it didn’t work, lol) but talk about edgy/urban – the styling is perfect: a real head turner and the fabric has that certain ‘feel me’ factor.
Then we have a hacking jacket in herb green with subtle checks in toffee, wine red and blue/grey – similar to Barbour and seen at twice the price (and half the size) in London! To go with this we have a couple of striped shirts (stripes and checks together? You may ask, but it really does work – it’s a city take on country gent), or for a more subtle look, wear the jacket with the plain pigment dye twill shirt in russet or midnight blue and team with jeans. Just don’t do checks with more checks or you really will look like the squire (unless you are, of course, in which case you can put the jacket with our pink striped shirt and still look, well like the country squire).
The range includes suits sold as separates, shirts up to 7XL for daytime casual, work and nights out and a comprehensive range of trousers and jeans, jeans, jeans up to waist 70, as well as a couple more casual, subtle jackets thrown in for good measure.
